KWR recently gained funding from the European Union Horizon 2020 programme for the research project ULTIMATE to support the European Union in building a water-smart economy and society. ULTIMATE will build an evidence base of industrial symbiosis applications and involves real-world, large scale demonstrations. The project focusses on so called “Water Smart Industrial Symbiosis” (WSIS). Water and wastewater play a key role as a reusable resource in itself, but also as a carrier for energy and materials to be extracted, treated, stored and reused. We are looking for an early career researcher (MSc level) to carry out research activities within the scope of ULTIMATE.
As an ULTIMATE researcher, you will develop and apply methodologies for safe reuse of treated wastewater and the safe recycling of nutrients contained therein. The aim is to achieve a closed water cycle in greenhouses in the Dutch Case Study of the ULTIMATE project. You will demonstrate and validate the possibility of providing (phyto-) pathogen free irrigation water in a real life horticultural environment in such a way that it enables the acceptance of such reuse schemes in practice. Furthermore, you will be involved in paving the way for the implementation of the solution through interaction with a variety of stakeholders and in performing lifecycle assessments. Although your main tasks will be related to the ULTIMATE project, it is anticipated that you will contribute to other projects at KWR as well.
KWR is looking for an early career researcher with:
- a completed MSc degree in, for example, Water Technology, Plant Pathology, Water and Wastewater Engineering, or a similar relevant field;
- the ability to approach the research from an integrated perspective;
- (practical) knowledge on the pathology and spreading of plant diseases;
- an interest in developing and testing novel water treatment technologies;
- the capability to develop risk assessment methodologies and perform QMRA;
- an understanding of relevant chemical and microbial processes;
- an ability to apply microbial water quality analysis techniques;
- a general interest in horticulture practices;
- the capacity to bridge science to practice and an interest in collaboration with researchers and partners in the Netherlands and worldwide;

PhD position in governance of medical technology –
Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management
In the Netherlands, the National Health Care Institute (Zorginstituut Nederland) maintains the quality, accessibility and affordability of health care. This role involves the tasks of improving the quality of health care services, clarifying the contents of the standard health care benefit package and stimulating appropriate care. This research project aims to examine how this crucial institute is performing these tasks in light of the development of medical technology.
To answer these questions, you will first perform a critical interpretive synthesis of literature on the governance of medical technology with for example quality standards, health technology assessment and societal weighing. Second, you will explore the role of the National Health Care Institute with regard to the development and deployment of new medical technology through analyzing documents and doing expert-interviews on several cases, and by interviews with external stakeholders (patients, citizens, medical professionals, policymakers, health insurers, and politicians). Third, a multiple case-study of medical technology in the Medical Delta program will explore the need for new means of regulation. Fourth, you will apply in an action-research (fourth and final part) for governance of medical innovations at the National Health Care Institute.
You will be based at the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management. Your supervisor is Prof. Antoinette de Bont and Prof. Diana Delnoij. Your supervisor will give guidance about opportunities to present your work in scientific articles and at conferences, to take courses, to arrange a research visit abroad, and to liaise with policymakers.
Finally, you will teach in the education programmes at Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (about 15% of your time).
POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN EPIDEMIOLOGY AND BIOSTATISTICS
The Public Health Research Group of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Cape Coast (UCC), Cape Coast, Ghana is looking to recruit a postdoctoral fellow to work on its DEMSU Project funded by the African Academy of Sciences.
The DEMSU Project seeks to investigate the dietary and environmental mediators of socioeconomic inequalities in child undernutrition in West Africa using Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) datasets.
The postdoctoral fellow will be located at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, UCC, work under the direct supervision of Dr. Kofi Amegah, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with very skilled epidemiologists and biostatisticians in reputable institutions in Africa, UK and North America
Responsibilities
The candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Pooling together DHS datasets across different waves within and across West African
countries; - Curing and managing (recoding and deriving variables) the datasets for comparability;
- Conducting epidemiological, econometrics and statistical analysis;
- Writing draft manuscripts and responding to journal review comments; and
- Assisting with teaching and assessment of epidemiology and/or biostatistics courses at
undergraduate and graduate levels.
Qualifications and Expertise
The ideal candidate should have the following:
- PhD or equivalent degree in Epidemiology and/or Biostatistics;
- Deep understanding and application of advanced epidemiological and statistical methods;
- Experience working with DHS or large datasets;
- Strong skills in the use of statistical software such as SAS, R and Stata;
- Excellent communication skills; and
- Record of publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals
Duration and Career Development
- The position is for one and half years with an anticipated start date in August, 2020.
- Based on satisfactory performance, the candidate could be appointed as a Lecturer/Senior
- Lecturer into the Department of Biomedical Sciences after end of the fellowship.
Salary and Benefits
- The gross salary for the position is USD$1380 per month.
